Phase-resolved high-resolution spectrophotometry of the eclipsing polar HU Aquarii

چکیده
We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of the bright, eclipsing polar HU Aqr obtained with high time (∼30 sec) and spectral (1.6Å) resolution when the system was in a high accretion state. The trailed spectrograms reveal clearly the presence of three different line components with different width and radial velocity variation. By means of Doppler tomography their origin could be located unequivocally (a) on the secondary star, (b) the ballistic part of the accretion stream (horizontal stream), and (c) the magnetically funnelled part of the stream (vertical stream). For the first time we were able to derive a (near-)complete map of the stream in a polar. We propose to use Doppler tomography of AM Herculis stars as a new tool for the mass determination of these binaries. This method, however, still needs to be calibrated by an independent method. The asymmetric light curve of the narrow emission line originating on the mass-donating companion star reveals evidence for significant shielding of 60% of the leading hemisphere by the gas between the two stars.

Dissecting the donor star in the eclipsing polar HU Aquarii
Medium-resolution spectroscopic observations with full phase coverage of the eclipsing polar HU Aqr are presented. Na i absorption and Ca ii emission lines are used to trace the secondary star. While the Na i lines seem to have contributions from both hemispheres of the donor star, the Ca ii lines were found to originate from the irradiated part of its surface alone. An irradiation model was ap...

Aims. We want to study the temporal and spectral behaviour of HU Aqr in the X-ray domain during different accretion states. Methods. We obtained spectra and light curves from four different XMM-Newton pointings covering intermediate and low states. The X-ray observations were accompanied with high time resolution photometry obtained with the Optima and ULTRACAM instruments. Results. On two occa...
متن کاملSimultaneous EUV and IR Observations of the Eclipsing Polar HU Aqr
We present simultaneous EUV and infrared (J,K) observations of the polar HU Aqr obtained during August 1998 when the star was in a high mass accretion state. EUV and IR light curves and EUV spectra are presented and compared with previous observations. The accretion region on the white dwarf has increased in temperature (124,000K to 240,000K) and radius (0.04 RWD to 0.06 RWD) compared with prev...
متن کاملAADor – An Eclipsing Post Common - Envelope Binary
AA Dor (LB 3459) is an eclipsing, close, single-lined, post common-envelope binary (PCEB) consisting of an sdOB primary star and an unseen secondary with an extraordinary small mass – formally a brown dwarf. The brown dwarf may have been a former planet which survived a common envelope phase and has even gained mass. A recent determination of the components' masses from results of state-of-the-...
